The Ganges River and its source at Gomukh on the Gangotri Glacier, along with many surrounding peaks, hold immense significance in Hinduism. The Ganges is the national river of India, and Gomukh is one of the holiest sites for Hindu pilgrims who visit to see the origin of Mother Ganga. According to legend, Goddess Ganga descended to Earth from heaven after the prolonged penance of King Bhagirath at Gangotri. That is why this place is known as the Source of the Ganges. The actual source of the river today lies 19 km from Gangotri at Gaumukh (Cow's Mouth).
The Sources of Ganges Trek follows the river and leads to its origin at Gomukh. The trail passes through Bhojwassa via Chirbasa (3600 m), where the terrain becomes barren and isolated. Along the way, trekkers enjoy enthralling views of the Gangotri group of peaks and Mount Shivling. This trek provides a unique opportunity to experience the sacred river and the beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas. The best time for this trek is May to June and September to October.
At Trekking in India, we offer the Sources of Ganges Trekking Tour, which is approximately a week long. From self-supported trekking to camping in the Himalayas, this tour provides a lifetime adventure experience.
