Overview

Located at an altitude of 6,543 m, Shivling is a two-summit mountain near the snout of the Gangotri Glacier in Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the most stunning peaks of the Garhwal region. Shivling is also known as the “Indian Matterhorn” due to its unique shape. The Shivling trek is popular among climbers and adventure enthusiasts.

After the discovery of the Gangotri Glacier in 1933 by a British traveler, a German traveler, R. Schwarzengruber, explored Shivling in 1938 and climbed many surrounding peaks. Since then, around ten other routes have been established for climbing Shivling.

At Trekking in India, we offer an exclusive Shivling Trekking Tour for adventure lovers. During this trek, you will explore Tapovan, the high-altitude meadow between Gaumukh and Shivling, a site known for breathtaking views and spiritual significance. Himalayan goats (Ibex) are commonly sighted here, and if lucky, you may even spot a rare snow leopard. The trek also includes Nandanvan (4,340 m), Meru Glacier, Kirti Bamak Glacier, and Vasuki Tal, a picturesque lake near Mt. Satopanth and Mt. Vasuki Parbat. Experienced trekkers can extend the journey to Badrinath by crossing several glaciers and the high Kalindi Khal pass.

The Shivling trek is rated moderate to challenging, and the best time to visit is May–June and September–October.
