The Deoriatal - Chopta - Chandrashila Trek is one of the most popular trails in the Garhwal Himalayas, attracting trekking enthusiasts from around the world. It is one of the shortest yet most rewarding treks—perfect for travelers with limited time. The trek offers the chance to camp beside the serene Deoriatal Lake, walk through the dense forests of North India, cross alpine meadows, and summit a 3,950 m peak that unveils breathtaking views of snow-clad Himalayan ranges.
During the Chopta Chandrashila Trek, you can visit Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world. You will also witness the beauty of Deoriatal Lake, surrounded by dense rhododendron forests and a variety of wildflowers and ferns. Chopta, one of the most scenic locations in the Garhwal region, lies on the Gopeshwar - Ukhimath road, about 40 km from Gopeshwar, at an altitude of 2,900 m. Known as the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand”, Chopta offers stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks and the surrounding valleys. From Tungnath (3,680 m / 12,070 ft), you will continue your ascent to Chandrashila.
Chandrashila, situated at about 4,000 m above sea level, is steeped in mythology. It is believed that Lord Rama meditated here after defeating Ravana. The name Chandrashila literally translates to “Moon Rock,” and according to another legend, Chandra—the Moon God—spent time here in penance.
Chandrashila offers mesmerizing views of the Trishul, Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and Kedar peaks.
