Forming a natural bridge between two of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites, Kedarnath and Badrinath, at an elevation of 4,200 meters, Panpatia Col is a high-altitude mountain pass that crosses the Panpatia Glacier. The trek is surrounded by several major peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas. Among the six-thousanders, Nilkantha (6,596 m) is the most prominent. Other notable peaks visible along the trail from Badrinath to Ransi include Balakun (6,108 m), Kunaling (6,471 m), Januhut (6,495 m), Shri Parbat (6,175 m), the Chaukhamba group, and several other 5,000-meter peaks.
The Panpatia Col Trek traverses two high-altitude mountain passes, moraines, gushing streams, and narrow cliffs, making it one of the toughest treks in the Garhwal region. Historically, it was a mythological route used by pilgrims to travel from Kedarnath to Badrinath in a single day. Over time, the route was lost, but a few intrepid explorers rediscovered it, placing it on the modern trekking map of the Garhwal Himalayas. The journey is enriched with picturesque campsites along pristine lakes, surrounded by alpine meadows dotted with Himalayan flowers.
The trek demands serious acclimatization at certain altitudes and is recommended only for trekkers with prior high-altitude trekking experience. Top-quality mountaineering equipment is essential for safety. Despite its challenges, the trek offers an unforgettable adventure in the Garhwal Himalayas.
The route begins from Badrinath, passing through Dumkal Kharak and Nilkanth Khal (4,650 m), then reaches the snout of Panpatia Glacier, winding through a glaciated track to climb the Panpatia plateau. After crossing Panpatia Col, the trail leads to Maidagala Tal, followed by a downhill trek to Madhyamaheshwar and finally Ransi. The tour concludes with a drive to Rishikesh. The best time to undertake the Panpatia Col Trek is during the summer and autumn months.
