Overview

One of the toughest treks in the Garhwal Himalayan region, the Nandikund Trek ranges from an elevation of 3,497 m to 4,800 m. It is one of the least explored treks in the Indian Himalayas, offering a strenuous journey with steep climbs, narrow ridges, and sharp turns along challenging trails.

Nandikund, situated at an altitude of 4,500 m, is one of the pristine high-altitude lakes in the region, surrounded by notable peaks, including the Chaukhamba group. It is believed that Nandikund is as deep as it is wide, spreading over an area of approximately 1.5 km. The lake is considered the source of the Madhyamaheshwar River, and the surrounding area holds immense spiritual significance for Hindu pilgrims, with a diorama of the Pandavas from the Mahabharata depicted nearby.

The trek begins from Ukhimath, accessible by road from Rishikesh via Srinagar. The route passes through Bantoli to Madhyamaheshwar and involves a steep climb to Kashani Dhar—an uphill trek of approximately 10 km. From Kashani Dhar, the trail continues to Kashani Tal (2 km) and then to Pandav Shera (14 km). The final stretch of 6 km leads to Nandikund, where trekkers camp overnight. The descent follows the trail to Dwari Gad, then to Dhaula Udiyar, and back to Ukhimath via Bantoli. This trek offers some of the most memorable adventure experiences in the Garhwal region.
