The Kagbhusandi Lake Trek in the Garhwal Himalayas offers an extraordinary journey that transforms the challenges of a strenuous hike into a magical experience. Situated at an elevation of approximately 5,230 meters, Kagbhusandi Lake is a high-altitude gem, surrounded by barren mounds and encircled by a riot of colorful alpine flowers. Towering snow-clad peaks frame the lake, with Hathi Parvat (6,730 meters) being the most prominent. Trekkers are also treated to breathtaking views of Neelkanth, Chaukhamba, and Nar-Narayan peaks.
The trek provides opportunities to interact with tribal villagers who lead a nomadic lifestyle in these remote mountains. Traversing lush green meadows, gurgling streams, and dense alpine forests, the trail to Kagbhusandi Lake is a visual feast. The trek also involves narrow, rocky paths deep in the Garhwal Himalayas, making it one of the less-explored yet most rewarding trekking experiences in the region.
There are two popular routes to reach Kagbhusandi Lake, both offering panoramic views of the Garhwal Himalayas. One route begins near Vishnu Prayag via Painka Village, while the other starts from Govind Ghat via Bhyundar Village, en route to the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Valley of Flowers. At Bhyundar Village, the trail splits: the left path leads to the Valley of Flowers, while the right path follows the Karnkul Ganga River—originating from a glacier near Raj Khark—towards Kagbhusandi Tal.
Along the trek, there are numerous scenic meadows and campsites that delight trekkers, including Kargila, Semartoli, Bankbara, Dang Khark, and Raj Khark. Traditionally used for grazing by shepherds, these areas now serve as the primary pasturelands for livestock, as grazing is restricted within the nearby National Park. This makes Kagbhusandi Valley not only a natural haven but also an essential resource for local communities.

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Joshimath, a gateway town in the Garhwal Himalayas. The route follows the Alaknanda River, passing through the sacred confluences of Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag. Stop for lunch in Srinagar and continue through lush valleys and quaint Himalayan villages. Arrive at Joshimath by evening, check into your hotel, and relax. Overnight stay in Joshimath.
Start your day with breakfast and, if weather permits, enjoy spectacular views of Hathi Parvat. Drive to Govind Ghat, the starting point for several famous treks, including the Valley of Flowers. From here, begin the trek to Bhyundar Village along the same trail as the Valley of Flowers trek. The initial part of the trail is steep but gradually opens into wider paths. Overnight stay at Bhyundar Village.
Wake up early to witness a magical sunrise over snow-capped peaks. Depart from the Valley of Flowers trail and cross the Laxman Ganga River via a wooden bridge. Follow the trail along Karnkul Ganga, passing through rhododendron forests and alpine terrain. There is a chance to spot Himalayan brown bears in these dense forests. Continue trekking to the alpine meadow of Semartoli, passing through Gairgilla. Overnight stay in Semartoli.
The trail today is adorned with vibrant alpine flowers. Trek from Semartoli through Dang Kharak before reaching Raj Kharak. The path is mostly flat with rocky stretches, opening into wide valleys where the ridges of Dhank Kharak Glacier can be seen. Shepherds and livestock may be encountered during grazing season. A stream crossing and scree walking are required to reach Dang Kharak. End the day with a camp stay at Raj Kharak.
This is one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the trek. Begin from Raj Kharak and ascend Kankul Khal to reach the pristine Kagbhusandi Tal. The trail starts across wide meadows with alpine flowers but narrows into steep, rocky paths. The journey offers breathtaking views of Nilkanth, Hathi Parvat, Ghodi Parvat, Chaukhamba, and Nar-Narayan Peaks. After boulder-hopping and navigating narrow paths, reach the hidden emerald lake Kagbhusandi Tal for an overnight camp.
This day is kept flexible as a buffer for acclimatization, rest, or unforeseen delays. Overnight stay at Kagbhusandi Tal.
Trek across Brahmahi Khal, the steepest part of the entire route. The descent is challenging, with scree and moraine requiring careful navigation. After descending, continue to Jhari Kharak for overnight camping.
Start early to cross Faraswan Pass, a moderately difficult trail compared to the previous day. Descend into the valley to Painka, the roadhead on this side. From Painka, drive to Vishnuprayag for overnight stay in a hotel.
Drive to Haridwar, arriving by evening. Check into your hotel and relax. Overnight stay in Haridwar.
After an early breakfast, check out and drive back to Delhi. Arrive at Delhi International Airport for onward travel.
