Overview

The Parang La Trek is one of the most interesting trekking expeditions in Himachal Pradesh. The high-altitude pass connects the high-altitude village of Kibber in Spiti to the remote shores of Lake Tso Moriri in Ladakh. Standing at 5,580 m, Parang La has served as an ancient trade route linking Spiti, Changthang, and Tibet. Today, it is recognized as one of the best high-altitude treks in Himachal Pradesh. One gets to cross glaciers, explore vast valleys, and walk through some of the lesser-known trails of the Indian Himalayas.

This trekking tour in Himachal Pradesh starts in Dumla near Kibber (4,250 m). This area is known for its meadows, Spiti horses, and occasional sightings of the elusive snow leopard. From here, the trail winds through Parilungbi Gorge, the lush pastures of Thaltak, moraine fields, and icy glaciers before climbing to the Parang La pass. On the other side, trekkers follow the Pare Chu River, which flows across the Indo-Tibetan border before re-entering Spiti. This rare geographical feature adds to the trek's uniqueness.

The route stays above 4,400 m for most of the journey and requires crossing cold river crossings, steep climbs, and the long glacier approach to the pass. However, all the effort pays off when you reach the southern shore of the turquoise blue Tsomoriri Lake in Kiangdam, Ladakh. This stunning spot is named after the Tibetan wild ass “Kiang” that roams freely in the area. Tsomoriri also attracts migratory birds like the black-necked crane, bar-headed geese, and Brahminy ducks, making it a paradise for nature lovers.

For those interested in taking up a challenging trek in the Himalayas, the Parang La route offers a great mix of history, adventure, and breathtaking scenery.
