Overview

The name “Manimahesh” comes from two Sanskrit words: “Mani,” meaning “jewel,” and “Mahesh,” meaning “Lord Shiva.” Together, they signify “the jewel of Lord Shiva,” perfectly capturing the sacred and mystical aura of this Himalayan peak in Himachal Pradesh. Rising to an impressive 5,653 meters in Himachal's Bharmour (Chamba) region, Manimahesh Kailash is also known as Chamba Kailash and is revered as one of the Panch Kailash, the holy abodes of Lord Shiva. At the base of the peak lies the serene Manimahesh Lake at 4,080 meters, to where an annual Manimahesh Kailash Yatra takes place. The sacred yatra is traditionally held from Janmashtami to Radha Ashtami, usually falling in August and September.

The Manimahesh Yatra offers a perfect blend of spiritual devotion and Himalayan adventure. This religious trekking tour in Himachal begins at Pathankot with a picturesque drive to Bharmour via Chamba, where ancient temples and lush valleys set the tone for the pilgrimage. After acclimatizing in Bharmour and visiting the 1,400-year-old Chaurasi Temple complex, the trek unfolds with a short drive to Hadsar, the last motorable point.

From Hadsar, a 7 km trail leads to Dhancho through dense forests and rocky paths, adorned with the beautiful Dhancho Waterfall. The next day is the major highlight of the yatra, a challenging 7 km ascent to the sacred Manimahesh Lake at 4,080 m. Here, devotees witness the awe-inspiring reflection of Manimahesh Kailash Peak on the lake's crystal-clear waters, take a holy dip, and offer prayers to Lord Shiva. An overnight stay near Gauri Kund adds to the serene experience.

The return trek to Hadsar the following day is equally captivating, with sweeping views of snow-clad peaks and verdant meadows. After resting in Bharmour, the final leg of the journey includes a visit to the lush meadows of Khajjiar before concluding at Pathankot. This 5-day sacred trek in Himachal Pradesh combines spirituality, natural beauty, and cultural richness, leaving one with memories and blessings to cherish for a lifetime.
