The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage trek in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. The trek takes one to the Kinner Kailash Shivling, a 79-foot naturally standing rock pillar at an altitude of around 4,800 m. The Shivling, which represents Lord Shiva and is among the Panch Kailash, is famous for its unique appearance and the way it changes colors with the position of the sun. This trek in Himachal is spiritual and adventurous at the same time, inviting both beginners and seasoned trekkers alike for an experience of a lifetime.
This popular trek in Himachal traditionally starts from Tangling village (2,400 m), about 8 km from Reckong Peo, and follows a steep, challenging trail that passes through Ganesh Park, formerly called Ashiqui Park, before the final ascent to the Shivling. Another route begins from Charang Village, leading to the Charang La Pass, but the Tangling - Ganesh Park route is the main pilgrimage trail. The total trek covers 17 to 18 km (one way) with altitudes rising sharply, demanding good physical fitness and acclimatization.
Unlike other treks, this pilgrimage trek in Himachal Pradesh combines high-altitude challenges with deep religious significance. Every year, hundreds of pilgrims undertake this journey, often barefoot or with minimal gear, as an act of devotion. The route offers sweeping views of the Greater Himalayas, the Zanskar ranges, and the Sutlej Valley, making the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra a rare blend of spirituality and Himalayan adventure.
