The Bara Bhangal Trek is one of the most challenging treks in Himachal Pradesh. The trekking trail links the lush Kullu Valley with the remote Bara Bhangal region, cradled between the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges. The trek leads through rugged terrain, secluded valleys, and striking Himalayan scenery, culminating at the ancient village of Bara Bhangal, a glimpse of life in its purest mountain form. Trekkers tackle two major crossings, Kalihani and Thamsar, each involving steep ascents and glacier traverses, rewarded throughout by sweeping views of snow-clad peaks.
This trekking tour in Himachal starts from Manali; the trail winds through cedar and oak forests to the lush meadows of Lamadugh, where Himalayan monals and foxes may appear. Climbing higher, trekkers are rewarded with sweeping vistas of Indrasan (6221 m), Deo Tibba (6001 m), and the entire Kullu Valley from the ridges of Khanpari Tibba. The trekking trail then ascends beyond the tree line to the alpine camp at Shangor before tackling the icy slopes of Kalihani Pass (4,830 m). Here, spectacular views of the Kullu and Lahaul ranges unfold, followed by a thrilling descent over glaciers and rocky streams to the pastoral meadows of Dhanko Thach and Lamba Parao. The trail continues to the remote Gaddi village of Bara Bhangal, a fascinating cultural stop nestled amid towering peaks.
From Bara Bhangal, the climb resumes toward the base of Thamsar Pass, where alpine meadows and panoramic views of the Dhauladhar Range await. Crossing the 4,730 m pass, the path drops through forested valleys along the Uhl stream, passing the charming village of Rajgunda. The adventure concludes at Bir, famed for its Tibetan monasteries and world-class paragliding site at Billing.
Blending challenging high passes, pristine alpine scenery, and exploring a village so far away from civilization, this trek in Himachal Pradesh offers an unforgettable Himalayan expedition for seasoned adventurers.
