Overview

Tucked away in the remote Kumaon Himalayas of Uttarakhand, the Ralam Dhura Pass stands tall at an altitude of 5,645 m in the Munsiyari region, linking the Johar Valley with the Darma Valley. Also known as Sipu Pass, this high-altitude gateway is regarded as one of the most challenging treks in Kumaon. Its legacy dates back to 1950, when it was first crossed by a Scottish Himalayan Expedition team from the Ralam side, and later in 2005 by Krishna Kutty from the Darma side. Today, the Ralam Dhura Pass Trek calls out to true adventurers, those who thrive on challenges and dream of pushing their limits to achieve something truly extraordinary.

The Ralam Dhura Pass Trek begins at Lilam Village, tracing the course of the Gori Ganga River before ascending through centuries-old settlements, dense oak and rhododendron forests, and high-altitude meadows. As you approach Yangchuri Base Camp, the scenery shifts dramatically, preparing you for the ultimate highlight, a demanding traverse across ice fields, snow slopes, and rocky ridges of the mighty Ralam Dhura Pass. From here, sweeping panoramas of towering Himalayan peaks unfold in every direction.

The descent into Nipakchung Valley adds another layer of thrill, with technical stretches that often require the use of ropes. Beyond this challenging section, the terrain softens into alpine meadows and picturesque villages like Sipu and Dantu. The journey culminates at Dugtu Village via the spectacular Panchachuli Base Camp (4,260 m), one of Kumaon's most breathtaking trekking destinations.

This trek in the Kumaon Himalayas is best suited for seasoned trekkers seeking an offbeat and demanding trail. More than just a mountain crossing, the Ralam Dhura Pass Trek is a journey into the raw and untouched spirit of the Kumaon Himalayas.
