Overview

Located in a restricted area, the Green Lake Trek is one of the least explored treks in Sikkim, visited by only a few adventurers so far. Special permits are required, which must be applied for well in advance. The trail offers a perfect blend of pristine natural beauty and breathtaking views of towering Himalayan peaks and ranges.

Throughout the trek, you'll pass through vast stretches of dense forests filled with blooming rhododendrons, blue poppies, and primulas. Numerous waterfalls cascading along both sides of the trail add to its scenic charm.

Green Lake, situated at the base of Mt. Kangchenjunga on the Zemu Glacier in North Sikkim, provides spectacular views of the mighty Kanchenjunga range. We have established our Green Lake base camp at over 5,000 meters to help trekkers acclimatize comfortably. Accommodation is provided in well-equipped camps with essential facilities. The trek begins from Bagdogra Airport and covers Lachen, Tallem, Jakthang, Yabuk, and Green Lake. After two days of rest at the Green Lake base camp, the return journey follows the same route back to Lachen.

This trek is both physically demanding and technically challenging, making it ideal for experienced and adventurous trekkers seeking a true Himalayan expedition.

Itinerary

Green Lake Trek Itinerary

Day 01:Delhi - Bagdogra - Gangtok

Fly from Delhi to Bagdogra. On arrival, drive to Gangtok (124 km / 5 hrs). Overnight stay in hotel.

Day 02:Gangtok - Lachen (2,730 m / 8,950 ft) (135 km / 6 - 7 hrs)

After breakfast, drive to Lachen in North Sikkim. Overnight stay in hotel/tents.

Day 03:Lachen - Tallem (3,240 m / 10,620 ft) (12 km / 5 - 6 hrs)

Begin trekking towards Zema, where the Zemu Chu and Thangu Chu rivers meet. After crossing a bridge, the trail follows the left bank of the Zemu Chu toward Green Lake. The first 6 km is broad and easy, though occasional landslides may occur. After another 6 km, reach Tallem, located at the confluence of Lhonak Chu and Zemu Chu. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 04:Tallem - Jakthang (3,430 m / 11,250 ft) (12 km / 5 - 6 hrs)

Enter the lush forests for which Sikkim is famous. Cross a bridge and climb steadily through dense vegetation to Shobuk. The trail then descends steeply to Jakthang, a small forest clearing. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 05:Jakthang (3,430 m / 11,250 ft)

A rest and acclimatization day. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 06:Jakthang - Yabuk (4,040 m / 13,250 ft) (8 km / 4 - 5 hrs)

Continue through the forest, crossing a bridge over Thombak Chu. The path includes several ascents and descents, sometimes affected by floods. The trail then descends to the banks of Zemu Chu before reaching Yabuk, a small but beautiful and windy campsite near the glacier. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 07:Yabuk - Rest Camp (4,725 m / 15,500 ft) (8 km / 3 - 4 hrs)

From Yabuk, the trail enters the moraine field of Zemu Glacier, crossing boulders and rocky terrain. Though challenging, the trek rewards you with magnificent views of Mt. Siniolchu, Mt. Simvu, and glimpses of Mt. Kangchenjunga. Overnight stay in tents at Rest Camp, near the mouth of Lhonak Valley.

Day 08:Rest Camp - Green Lake (4,935 m / 16,190 ft) (6 km / 3 - 4 hrs)

Trek along the moraine ridge toward Green Lake, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Camp overnight on a vast open ground near Green Lake.

Day 09:Green Lake (4,935 m / 16,190 ft)

Full day for rest and exploration. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Kangchenjunga range. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 10:Green Lake - Rest Camp (4,725 m / 15,500 ft) (6 km / 2 - 3 hrs)

Begin the return journey toward Rest Camp. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 11:Rest Camp - Yabuk (4,040 m / 13,250 ft) (8 km / 3 - 4 hrs)

Descend gradually to Yabuk, enjoying the beautiful views en route. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 12:Yabuk - Jakthang (3,430 m / 11,250 ft) (8 km / 3 - 4 hrs)

Continue descending through forests to Jakthang. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 13:Jakthang - Tallem (3,240 m / 10,620 ft) (12 km / 4 - 5 hrs)

An easy day's walk with moderate ups and downs to Tallem. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 14:Tallem - Lachen (2,730 m / 8,950 ft) (12 km / 4 - 5 hrs)

Final day of trekking toward Lachen. Mostly downhill and comfortable. Overnight stay in tents / hotel.

Day 15:Lachen - Gangtok (135 km / 5 - 6 hrs)

After breakfast, drive back to Gangtok. Overnight stay in hotel.

Day 16:Gangtok - Bagdogra & Departure

Wake up to your final morning in the Himalayas, pack your bags, and prepare for the drive to Bagdogra Airport. Board your flight back to your respective city, carrying unforgettable memories of the incredible Green Lake Trek — a journey filled with adventure, beauty, and serenity.

Trek Essentials & Policies

Accommodation:
  • In cities, accommodation will be provided in 3-star category hotels on a double / twin - sharing basis. During the trek, we provide dome / alpine tents along with sleeping mats, camping stools, chairs, tables, a kitchen tent, dining tent, and toilet tent.
Transport:
  • Arrival and departure transfers from the airport/train station, sightseeing as per itinerary, and trek drop and pickup by SUV.
Meals:
  • In cities / towns, breakfast and dinner will be served. During the trek, all meals are included. Meals will be a mix of Indian, Chinese, and Continental cuisine.
Mules / Porters:
  • Provided for carrying camping equipment, rations, vegetables, and a limited amount of personal luggage (one bag per person, not exceeding 14 kg).
